About David Tally;

David Tally

This photograph is a ‘talented piece of art’ quoted by many other photographers. It definitely has the aspect of surreal photography, giving the illusion that the ladder is floating in the air with the man on it, defeating the rules of gravity. Davis Tally is really creative within his work, he thinks outside the box, which is what surreal photography is all about. In this particular photograph the photographic aspects enhances the ladder; the fact that the sky has clouds looks almost like he is in the air, high up away from the sea. He is on a sand dune that is brought to life with long green grass growing out of it. There isn’t much colour in the photograph, in terms of a wide pallet range there’s just the blue of the sky, the light brown of the sand and the dull red book in his hand, that all complement each other to enhance the floating ladder. Another real aspect of the photograph is the shadow of the ladder that also brings out the surreal aspect of the photograph – it makes it seem so real.  The composition of the photograph defeats the photography rule of thirds, as the man is in the middle of the photograph. But this is effective because it gives the image dimension and makes it seem so real, but we know its not – creating that surreal atmosphere.

This image is of David Tally’s nephew; they were going for a walk at the back of their cottage, they went too far into the woods and this happened. David Tally did not plan any part of this image before it was taken; in fact it was a mistake. But David Tally used this image in his portfolio and photo-shopped it; creating crows that look as if they are flying around the boys head. It gives the image an almost sinister look about him as he is facing the camera and his blue eyes are being enhanced by the darkness around him. This photograph can be manipulated in several ways within anyone’s mind; they can create a story behind the image, as it is so versatile to the mind. David Tally also put the saturation right down on the image and put the contrast up to create the darkness around the boy, adding to the sinister effect. He has also blurred out the background behind the boy; this may have been done to focus on the boy, but I believe it adds a mystery effect. The blurred trees are a metaphor for the boy, implying that he is confused and a little weary about his situation, which again adds to the sinister feel of the photograph. The boy is situated slightly to the left of the photograph; this is effective because we are allowed to see some blurred trees in the background, to the left of the photograph. I believe David has done this to show the darkness behind the boy, maybe implying that the boy is not the only person in the woods.

David Tally is photographer who focuses on surreal shoots, which means he dedicates his time to Photoshop.
