Kyle Thompson

I really like this photograph of Kyle Thompsons work; it really does enhance the surreal aspect of the photograph. Kyle Thompson has made the background slightly out of focus, to draw the eye to the boy, which isn’t hard to ignore. The colour of the white fabric really contrasts the different shades of red in the background.  The houses in the background are not in focus, which makes the man stand out. The composition of the man wrapped in fabric is in the middle of the photograph; Thompson has done this to show the significance of the lift drawing the eye to the subject. The face that the houses behind him are of all a red tone, contrasts the bright white fabric of this shirt and the cream cloth, this again makes the subject stand out. One of the most significant factors in this photograph is the way the fabric has a motion about it, leading our eyes around the subject. This also makes the surrealism aspect of the photograph blend in with the reality aspect, which makes it seamless and therefore makes the photograph even more significant.

This photograph that Kyle Thompson has taken is different from his other collection of photographs. This is because he has not taken a self-portrait and instead taken a photograph of another subject. The photograph emphasises a weary mood, this is because of the mist included in the photograph that lingers around, however does not affect the subject or the balloons in the photograph. The colour black is significant in this photograph, as it not only stands out from the green background, but also adds to the weary and dark atmosphere created. Although this photograph is different from his other work, Thompson has still kept the subject in the middle of the photograph, betraying the rule of thirds. But this is a very effective way to express the subject the photograph. The fact that the balloons are floating midway also adds another dimension to the photograph, giving the eye plenty to look at. This is effective because Thompson does not bore the observer, he gives them enough to think about in the photograph so that they can dwell deeper in it, catching their attention immediately.
